In my position as Community Outreach Representative for LIBERTY Dental Plan, I am honored to be able to work with many communities within Sacramento County to promote oral health. Sacramento is the hub of our state’s political landscape and I have been fortunate to speak with several State Legislators, local Board of Supervisors and City Council members to share with them LIBERTY’s determination in advancing positive oral health experiences to our members. Everywhere I go I am constantly talking about LIBERTY’s incredible professional team who provides our members with considerate, professional and helpful service. The Sacramento community is thankful for our hard work and the effort we put in to helping them!
My primary community outreach focus is to Sacramento County GMC members. In June of 2016, I was thrilled to coordinate the launch of the Early Smiles Sacramento initiative program. Working with the GMC members and the extensive Sacramento County oral health community, LIBERTY, along with Health Net and Access Dental Plan, partnered with Center for Oral Health to form the Early Smiles Sacramento program. This new school-based initiative provides dental screenings and preventative fluoride varnish treatments to underserved students in Sacramento County, as well as oral health education to the students and their parents.

While Early Smiles Sacramento provides the dental screenings for six local school districts within Sacramento County, I am working directly with school nurses and health services support staff in all Sacramento County school districts to train them on how families can easily utilize their GMC dental insurance. I also go into the elementary classrooms to give oral health presentations for the students; teaching them about oral health and acting out how easy and fun going to the dentist is. Over the last year, Early Smiles Sacramento has screened almost 8,000 students! Our LIBERTY team has also been incredibly effective working with Early Smiles Sacramento to help navigate the LIBERTY and Health Net student members. This navigation and guidance has been a huge help to the parents of the students and is extremely appreciated.

In addition to the extensive community outreach through Early Smiles Sacramento, I am also involved with many oral health presentations and GMC insurance utilization training. This entails working with our local Family Resource Center staff, new refugee families at the International Rescue Committee, case managers at the Sacramento Crisis Nursery, teen parenting groups and the CPS-mandated Nurturing Parenting Program.

A very rewarding aspect of my job is getting personally involved with the Sacramento County community members through various community outreaches such as: International Kids Day, Senator Richard Pan’s Health Fair, Del Paso Heights Harvest Festival, Healthy Kids Day with Sacramento Covered, Celebrando Nuestra Salud, Twin Rivers USD Kindergarten Round Up, Rise Up’s Healthy Hmong Family Day and Family Fun Days and Back to School Bashes at five different Family Resource Centers.

LIBERTY’s community outreach continues to expand, reaching out to several local family shelters as well as Sacramento’s school for homeless children and homeless women who are working on their education to enter the work force. In addition, LIBERTY is strengthening our partnerships with First 5 Sacramento, the Sacramento District Dental Society, Children Now, Head Start and many other local community organizations to further expand oral health education and access.
